Lions Municipal "Muny"
Austin - TX
Around $50 - Weekend Twilight
Walkability score - 8 - Not too bad
A very old school course with a lot of cool golf feel. Don't expect much, the carts are crap and the pro shop doesn't sell alcohol but this place is a lot of fun. this is a course to come out with friends or family and just enjoy the game of golf on a fun course that isn't too difficult. The University of Texas is trying to figure out what to do with this land which can put this course in jeopardy of surviving. Help keep this course and the game of golf alive for many in Austin by visiting https://www.themunyconservancy.com/
It wouldn’t have been a golf trip in Austin if we hadn’t stopped in to play lions municipal.
“Muny”, as the locals call it, opened in 1924 and was the first public golf course in the city. It started out as a 9-hole course but in 1936 they expanded to 18 holes.
We didn’t know what to expect... especially when people reached out to us and told us that we HAD to call first thing in the morning five days out to book a tee time.
We teed off around 4:30pm on Saturday and it was such a fun experience. The course was packed but pace of play was fine. The course itself has some challenging holes sprinkled in with some easy ones. The greens were in good shape considering how much traffic they get.
Lions Municipal leases the 141 acres it sits on from The University of Texas. Recently, UT announced that they were looking for a permanent tenant for the land - which threatened the existence of Muny.
In 2019, the Muny Conservancy was created to raise funds to work with UT to purchase the course. You can go to their website

We also urge you to go to the website above and make your own donation if you can. Even if you don’t live in Austin, we hope that you share the same passion for public golf.
